Is American education preparing students to be successful in the world today?

If so, what and/or whose prophesy of success does it support? Is preparation empowering, or does it offer some-more guileful purposes?

I believe that education (K-12) typically teaches towards tests, whether they’re the SATs, ACTs, state-wide tests, etc. The schools don’t typically teach anything that will really be used, but rather, they teach what will lead to better test scores which lead to attention/funds for the schools. American colleges, on the other hand, provide students with the ability to reckon abstractly, information directed towards particular interests, and help with emotional intelligence (which is now one of the two most imperative qualities a job-seeker needs). A college education is very empowering.
