There are three basic routes to becoming an registered nurse:

Associates degree in nursing: usually two years, or four semesters in length (after general education prerequisites are completed) usually done at community colleges or trade schools.

Bachelors degree in nursing, or BSN: Four year program done at a university.

Diploma nurses: Most of these programs have died out in favor of more well rounded liberal arts based education, but are two to four years in length and are usually offered in training hospitals and are thought to include more hands on experience.

Upon completion of an accredited program students are then eligible to take the NCLEX-RN (National Council Licensing Examination for Registered Nurses), which has to passed in order to be called an RN.
